Farmers shouldn’t have to choose between their livelihood and their health.
We need to protect the very people who feed us by banning paraquat. Vermont became the first state in the nation to ban paraquat. Other states need to do the same.
The Health Harms of Paraquat
Chronic exposure to paraquat increases the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, as well as other health harms. People who applied paraquat were more than twice as likely to develop Parkinson’s disease as those who applied other pesticides. Paraquat applied near homes or workplaces has also shown to increase a person’s odds of developing Parkinson’s disease. Other health problems linked to paraquat include thyroid disease and cancer, impaired kidney function, childhood leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
